Fishing on the Currane System
One of Ireland's finest salmon and sea trout fisheries, with five generations of local knowledge.
World-Class Salmon & Sea Trout Fishing
Currane Lodge is situated on the north shore of Lough Currane, at the heart of one of the finest salmon and sea trout systems in Ireland. The Currane system produces many salmon, sea trout and brown trout each year, and an extraordinary 90–95% of all specimen sea trout over 6 lbs caught in Ireland are landed here.
Our expertise comes from five generations of our family providing gullies (guides), boats, tackle, and local knowledge. Whether you are fly fishing for grilse or hunting a specimen sea trout, we have the experience to put you on the fish.
Lakes & Rivers of the Waterville System

Lough Currane
The biggest lake in the system — 4 miles × 2 miles. The main body of water for salmon and sea trout, with Church Island at its heart.

Lough Derriana
The top lough on the Currane system, known for brown trout of a larger than average size. Quiet, wild and rewarding.

Lough Na Mona
A short distance from the Currane/Cummeragh system, this lough produces many of the very large sea trout. Worth the trip.
The Cummeragh River
Drains a catchment of 46 sq miles including 10 loughs into Lough Currane. Summer grilse fishing extends through to the end of September. An excellent sea trout river from July onwards.
The Rivers
The Inny
A long narrow mountain valley catchment of 47 sq miles. Fishing is usually confined to about 24 hours after a spate. Regarded mainly as a grilse fishery, it also gets a good run of sea trout from April and smaller fish throughout the summer.
The Currane (Butler's Pool)
The world-famous Butler's Pool is a short fishery of about 400 yards that drains Lough Currane and the entire Waterville System into the Atlantic. All fish entering the system must pass through here. Spring fish run straight into the lough, with enormous runs of sea trout throughout July and August.
Recommended fly patterns: Jungle Cock Spider, Bibio, Bloody Butcher, Silver Doctor. Salmon: Stoats Tail, Shrimp Patterns.
Hill Loughs
For adventurous anglers there are dozens of hill loughs on the Waterville System, all containing unique strains of free-rising brown trout. Some connected to the main upper lakes can hold large sea trout. Consult Ordnance Survey Map No. 83 (Discovery Series, 1:50,000) and Peter O'Reilly's book Loughs of Ireland.
